IN THE NEWS: FACEBOOK "PLACES" LOGO

Facebook Places logo is '4' in a square. Facebook Places, a new 'location tool' which has been accused of copying rival Foursquare, has launched with a new logo depicting the number '4' in a square.

The logo shows a purple icon above an image of a map in which the layout of the roads reflects the shape of the number four.

It is potentially embarrassing for Facebook because some blogs and websites have accused Places of being a rip off of existing location-based social networks such as Foursquare and Gowalla.

The new service allows its members to automatically share their location with each other.

People’s friends on the site can see if their friends are near them at any time, if they have chosen to ‘check-into’ their current location.

So far Places has only been launched in the US, with plans for a global roll-out “soon”.
